As some of you may have already heard, the new Disney TCG: Lorcana is coming out this year. Disney has now finally shown the products that will be available at release. We know the product range from the big three Trading Cards Magic the Gathering, Pokémon & Yu-Gi-Oh!
But now a little digression on what the Disney Trading Cards Game is all about:
In collaboration with Ravensburger Disney is launching a completely new trading card game this year, set in a magical world. We are so-called Luminari, who can summon all kinds of well-known and lesser-known characters from the Disney world using 6 different resources (so-called inks).
In addition to great original and new illustrations, each card naturally features values and abilities that can be used in the game to win. A total of 7 cards were shown at D23 and 6 of them were already available to buy. These included Mickey Mouse, Stitch, Elsa, Maleficent and others. This shows very well that Disney is drawing on various classic and more modern worlds of its own and that it will be a colorful mix of Disney characters.
Various abilities and keywords can already be seen on the (so far only English-language) cards. It can therefore be assumed that there will be similar mechanics as in other TCGs, so that you can play strong combos, among other things. Ravensburger has announced that following the publication of Disney Lorcana four expansions will be released each year. After several years of development work, it seems that the company does not want to bake small rolls and has a long-term plan.
How is Lorcana played?

In addition to the cards shown so far, the 6 resources in the game are also known. They are called inks. In English, these are Amber, Amethyst, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Steel. Translated, this would be amber, amethyst, emerald, ruby, sapphire and steel. These 6 inks match the 6 card colors shown so far.
There has also been a lot of speculation about what the mechanics on the cards shown so far could mean. It is thought that there will be similar mechanics to the more popular TCGs on the market. On the other hand, we’re talking Disney here, so it could be that everything is a bit more peaceful and we won’t get a fireball or any dark effects. But let’s see, I’m sure more will be announced in the coming months.

For example, Cruella de Vil costs 2 and Robin Hood 6, so the latter is significantly more expensive. This in turn fits in with the two character values, which I’ll mention here as attack and defense (nothing official has been said about this either). Cruella has 1 attack and 3 defense, while Robin Hood has a value of 4 each.
In addition to four large sets each year, Ravensburger has also announced that there will be an extensive event and tournament program. This also suggests that it will be a real competitive TCG.
What’s more, you don’t have to worry that the quality won’t be good. Disney Lorcana‘s product manager and co-designer Ryan Miller previously worked for a long time for Magic: The Gathering worked. So a lot of expertise has been brought on board.
When can you buy Disney Lorcana?
Ravensburger has recently announced that Disney Lorcana: Das erste Kapitel (this is the first set with more than 200 cards) will be released on August 18, 2023 in specialized game shops and on September 1, 2023 in normal shops.
