The main set of the 2021-2022 Standard rotation has been replaced by Dungeons & Dragons:: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms, a Dungeons & Dragons: crossover set to Magic: The Gathering. It was released on July 23, 2021 as the 88th Magic expansion. The cards’ artwork tells a story, and the description text mentions a number of popular D&D characters.
To begin with, the basic lands in this set contain flavor text. These are written in the style of a Dungeon Master’s description. The “traditional rulebook frame” for the showcase cards is inspired by the look and feel of the images in the original Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. Several new mechanics have been introduced in Dungeons & Dragons:: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms:
- Dice Rolling: This is the first time dice are rolled in black-bordered magic, and it uses D&D’s conventional d20 to add randomness and excitement to the set.
- Venture into the Dungeon: The Venture into the Dungeon keyword action is used in conjunction with the new “Dungeon” card type. Each time the player casts a spell or uses an ability with the “Venture” keyword action, they must explore a new level of the Dungeon (and an effect that triggers)”.
- Packs Tactics: Pack Tactics is a mechanic that triggers an effect when creatures with a combined power of 6 or more attack and only appears on red and green cards. This mechanic is similar to the Boast mechanic introduced in Kaldheim and synergizes with aggro strategies.
An Abenteuer in den Forgotten Realms Set Booster contains 12 playable cards:
